From July 1, 2024, the new criminal laws came into force. The Indian Penal Code was replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the CrPC by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Evidence Act by the Bharatiya Sakshya Act.
Key Changes
New offences, modified procedures, and changes in bail provisions are among the updates. Pending cases continue under the old law in many respects.
Implications
Advocates and litigants must be aware of the new provisions. Transitional provisions govern pending matters.
